Trekking to Laguna Torre in El Chaltén, Argentina

We start early in El Chaltén, around 08:30 to reach the base of the Torre lagoon in approximately 3 / 4h. This time is very good because it is the approximate time of dawn and prevents us from walking at night.

You can also leave once we arrive on the bus at 11:30 am, but we run the risk of finding the Torre lagoon against the light and most of the mountains in the shade, but this only at the end of the route (one way). Therefore it is a viable option if we go short of time.

Getting to the beginning of the route is simple and there are several indications on San Martin Avenue towards the beginning of the Route to the Torre lagoon. This part from Llao Llao street and begins with a steep slope where at the end of this we will have a panoramic view of the entire Chaltén. There is also access from Las Loicas Street, but if we do it from this access we will miss the views towards the Fitz Roy River and the canyon that has forged the river.

The road continues uphill, not very hard but always on a slope. This will end at the Cerro Torre viewpoint where we will have a sublime view of this mountain. Moreover, you will surely see many people focused on this point.

Circuit / Route of three days by the Chalten

From this point the thing gets very quiet. A mainly flat road for several kilometers and crossing forests of beautiful colors, especially in Autumn.

There is an area that was burned years ago but in no case worsens the view. Moreover, it has given that in certain places we find ideal plains for rest and even where large puddles or lagoons get to reflect the same Tower hill.

As we continue walking, we will cross a very humid forest, where light rays barely enter the day and the moss reigns in the bark of the trees. Area where the road can be found with mud and this opt for paths between weeds temporarily and thus avoid putting the boots in water.

After passing this forest, it will not take us to start climbing again to end at the crossroads between the agostin d campI and the lagoon tower. The Agostini camp has a bathroom and is completely free. Sleeping here is a great advantage to see the fantastic sunrise over the Torre lagoon.

The Laguna Tower

If we continue to the Torre lagoon it will not take more than 5 minutes to arrive, where the landscape will change abruptly, the trees will disappear to give way to the sand and rock sediments generated by the glacier. It is also likely that we encounter strong gusts of wind, generally cold when arriving from the ice field.

Trekking to Laguna Torre in El Chaltén

Optionally we can go to the Maestri Viewpoint to have a good view of the Maestri glacier. This section of the road is very windy and caution must be taken. From my point of view it is only the icing on the cake since with the rest of the route it is more than enough.
