How to visit the Statue of Liberty in New York

It is logical that if we visit New York we plan to visit in some way the statue of Liberty. The thing goes from budgets, from seeing it free from a distance, to step on the island where it resides and if we want, go up to the same head. I say head because the torch has been closed for years (1916) and we will not be allowed to climb to the top.

To start we have to head south of the island of Manhattan, near the subway station of South ferry, red line 1. This detail is important because as soon as we get off we can make a mistake and get on a wrong boat. The reason is because the terminal of ships that carry up Staten island (icon green of the map) part of there and as in the distance you see the statue of liberty, we can think that this is the correct terminal. However, at the exit of the subway we will be overwhelmed by ticket sellers who will tell us where the terminal really is.

You don't need to buy the tickets from them, if you continue to the right in the direction of Battery park, where there is a park right next to the sea, after 200 meters you will see the ticket offices. There you can buy two types of tickets, both visitEllis island and Liberty island. What we must choose is whether we stay until the pedestal of the statue of liberty or climb to the crown. The prices are from 18$ and 21$ respectively more or less. If we go on the weekend, it is advisable to book in advance.

Boats usually leave every 25 minutes, stopping first on Liberty island and then on Ellis island. As from Battery park, connections between islands and the return boat depart every 25 minutes as well. We simply take the one that suits us and if we lose it, we take the next one.

We recommend that you climb up and place yourself at the end of the right side of the ship, the stern. From there you can see the best views of Manhattan and the statue of liberty without a doubt. But beware, in mid-Autumn and especially winter, the wind that runs is freezer.

Once the ship docked in Liberty island, people go directly to the base of the statue of liberty to make the crown first. It is best to wait until the next boat arrives (25 minutes) and just before people disembark, go to the security checkpoint.

There we will have to leave all the bulky objects, since we will have to climb an endless narrow stairs to the crown itself. This has room for four or five people, little more and good insurance will disappoint you a little.

For me, the best of all are the views from the base viewpoint, which has access from the stairs. Virtually all of Manhattan is seen, since visibility is limited from the head of the statue of liberty. It only serves to tell you that you have been in the crown ... nothing more.

Upon returning down the stairs we will arrive at the museum where the history of the statue of liberty is explained through photographs and films. In addition we will have the pleasure of knowing the original torch, changed in 1986 by another bathed in another of 24 carats.

Now what we have left is to go around the island and admire the colossal statue, 93 meters without counting the pedestal. The truth seems very robust, but the funny thing is that it barely has a few millimeters of copper.

The statue is full of anecdotes and one of the most curious was on its opening day. An immense statue represents a woman and only two flesh and blood, and for different reasons, were invited to the island. Total if at that time they could not voteā€¦. the double standard of the late nineteenth century.

Finished our visit to Liberty island, we take the ferry to make the second stop, Ellis island. An island with nothing important visually but with a lot of history.

An island that passed from a military fort to one of the largest customs in the world. There any emigrant who arrived in New York was inspected and very few were deported. It is estimated that about 12 million people passed through there ... a lot.

A ferry that leaves every little time and all we have to do is get in line. It is best to be located in the back / top in the first leg (best for views of the skyline and statue) or on the right side and around the left side. Where to sleep in New York?

Those were the hotels we used on our last visit to New York. They were a success despite being located outside of Manhattan:

  • La Quinta Inn suites in Brooklyn: comfortable hotel and only 5 minutes from the subway. Spacious rooms with internet and breakfast included.
  • Ramada Queens: hotel in Queens very close to the subway and only 20 minutes from Manhattan. Internet included and breakfast apart.

Hotels that we recommended and that we could not enjoy. I recommend you book in advance when you are in Manhattan.

  • Broadway Hotel: located in a quiet area west of Central Park.
  • Belnord Hotel: located in the same area as the previous hotel and near the Museum of Natural Sciences.
  • Eurostars Wall Street: in the financial district and very close to the ferry to the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge.

One option is to rent an apartment. Remember that the owners have to accept you and send a confirmation. Unfortunately there have been cases of cancellations by the owners several days in advance so I recommend booking on a hotel website with the right to cancel just in case.
