On our last trip to Britain we toured the best castles of Wales, specifically in the north. Castles from different eras and building materials. Located in areas as disparate as on the top of a mountain, at the edge of the sea or watching the entry of ships in a narrow channel. In short, castles that did not disappoint us at all.

The best castles in Wales (North Zone)

Not everything was going to be hiking on our visit to North Wales like climbing the imposing Knowledgedon, its highest peak. We also spend our time in the cultural facet. Coming from a country like Spain where we have castles to dozens, the surprise effect is relatively low or that first is what we thought. Big mistake.

Wales has many castles, so many that it is impossible to see them all on a 15-day trip. This made us focus on a very specific area and where the best of the best is concentrated. Right in the northwest corner of Wales, near the Anglesey Island.

Wales castles

We put our base camp in the town of Llanberis, right at a campsite high in the mountain. This one had good views of the lake of Llyn Padam where curiously there is a little relevant castle, the Dolbadarn castle. But the reason for locating here was because we wanted to be in the mountains, in a quiet area.

During the next two days we began to travel our route of castles, keeping in mind that we wanted to see them both inside and out. This is an important fact because many of them closed soon, on the 17:00 when in summer we have light until 22:00, a shame.

Analyzed which were the best castles in Wales we started with Penrhyn castle, the most modern of all and the one that has an impressive interior appearance.

1 Penrhyn castle

In the middle of a fairytale forest and on top of a hill overlooking the sea stands the Penrhyn Castle. A perfect place to mark a simple hiking route or to walk with children. In the background we have the image of a modern castle with somewhat dark airs. Its walls are partly covered by a very thick yedra, giving it a really beautiful appearance, especially when it is illuminated with the afternoon sun.

Before entering, it is convenient to take a complete tour of the castle, admiring its towers and its different colors. So many nuances have to seem taken from a horror movie, perhaps because of that somewhat neglected aspect which is not so much.

The interior of the castle is accessed by a ramp that passes through an archway ending in a small square. A perfect place to sit for a while and admire the postcard in front of us.

Inside the aspect is really splendid, welcoming us an owl-shaped roof. Quickly one begins to realize the fortune accumulated by his former tenants.

The castle has two floors without a lift, watch the baby carriages ... In fact to climb up we have to go through a staircase that we should not miss. Maybe what I liked most about the interior of the castle.

Price of 11.80 pounds and 7.90 pounds the garden alone. It closes at 5:00 p.m.

2 Beaumaris castle

The next castle to visit was the Beaumaris Castle, in the locality of the same name. Located in the Anglesey Island, is strategically located on the channel that separates the island from Great Britain.

It is the typical moat castle that we all love. With water to overflow and with nice ducks swimming around. But let's make one thing clear, its interior does not attract much attention and the best is outside.

Entry costs 6.50 pounds to which we must add the 4 lbs of parking. It closes at 5:00 p.m.

3 Caernarfon castle

Caernarfon Castle is another one of those castles that is not worth entering. From the outside it is already impressive but its interior is rather poor. Unlike Beaumaris Castle, we can walk around it without scratching our pockets. Of course, if we are not ready the parking is paid, being free across the river.

The best time to visit them is from 18:00 just when they close the castle and the sun begins to illuminate its walls.

Entry costs 8.95 pounds. It closes at 18:00.

4 Conwy castle

Conwy Castle is perched on a walled city. Built by Eduardo I over 800 years ago, it is one of the most important castles in all of Britain. Its location of yesteryear was exceptional but the modern world has planted a modern road that unfortunately deteriorates the environment.

Here for example if it is worth visiting if inside. It gives you access to all its towers, located on several levels. These offer great views of the interior of the castle as of the city of Conwy as of the river of the same name

Of course, the best views of the castle are on the promenade, just across the bridge and somewhat away from the town. It's only 10 minutes walking that fly by.

Note that there are several parking lots attached to the castle, both on one side and on the other side of the wall. The closer the more expensive.

Practical data

When to visit the castles of Wales?

We must remember that Britain has very strict schedules and attractions close relatively soon, although there are many hours of light. They usually close between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., with the most frequent times between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. It's as if they love to eat at nearby restaurants.

Is it worth entering all the castles?

From my point of view, no. There are some who are far more colorful on the outside than on the inside. To this we must add that seeing many castles in a row can tire and therefore we have to choose well.

Where to sleep in North Wales?

One thing is for sure, the further we move away from Snowdonia, the better weather we will have. Coastal areas tend to have more daylight hours, so we consider the most recommended areas but that does not mean they are the most beautiful.

We must also bear in mind that prices are usually high, especially in the most central areas. Here are several examples:

  • YHA Conwy: the most economical option as it is a hostel. However they are comfortable and welcoming, especially if we opt for a private room.
  • Castle Court: option in Beaumaris, next to the castle. What more can we ask for.
  • Menai Bank Hotel: option in Caernarfon, a pretty village with a castle and a medieval touch.
